Step 1: Find accommodation

Usually accommodation is provided for IMPRS-TRUST students at least for their first weeks in Germany. Later, the institute assists its students with finding accommodation.

Prices in apartment offers normally refer to the “Kaltmiete”, i. e. the rental price without the extras, such as heating, electricity, garbage collection, etc. These additional costs depend on individual stipulation. You will need a signed lease agreement and a confirmation of the landlord/landlady (so-called Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) to register at the Bürgeramt / town hall. (Step 3)

Step 2: Health insurance

In order to start with your work contract and to register with the university, you need a German health insurance. To get coverage, you can opt for any statutory health insurance (so-called Gesetzliche Krankenkassen).

Step 3: Register at town hall

When registering at the town hall you will receive your residence attestation that you later need for opening a bank account. You need to bring your passport, a copy of your signed lease contract, and a confirmation of your landlord.

Step 4: Open a bank account

When opening a bank account you need to bring the proof of residence (Einwohnermeldebestätigung) you received from the town hall and your passport.

Step 5: Foreigners’ Office

You need to get a residence permit for the duration of your stay in Germany.

Before going to the foreigner’s office, you have to make an appointment. Otherwise, your request will not be treated. We assist you in arranging an appointment.

You usually need to bring:

  • 1 recent passport-size photo (biometric)
  • the completed residence permit application form
  • work contract
  • confirmation of registration at the town hall (Meldebescheinigung)
  • passport
  • fee
